![]() From soul-stirring renditions and humor to creative expressions of thanks, Monday night's 31st annual Jackson Music Awards moved a crowd of about 1,000. Performers relived the glory days of the legendary Memphis label Stax Records and its Mississippi connection with the theme "A Stroll Down Memory Lane." The event shone with label luminaries such as The Dramatics, J. Blackfoot, Frederick Knight, The Temprees and Eddie Floyd Derrick and Carol Cooper of 24/7 perform songs in tribute to Frederick Knight and Shirley Brown from Stax Records at the annual Jackson Music Awards Monday evening at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Jackson. Knight walked away as the biggest winner with two awards, Producer of the Year and Best Engineered Recording. He also was honored as part of the Stax Records family. Knight spoke on behalf of the now-defunct label and partially undressed to reveal a surprise. "I wore this to say something special," Knight said as he opened his overshirt to reveal a Stax Records T-shirt. "Thanks, you've made me feel very welcome." Knight had a major release on Stax Records in 1973 with I've Been Lonely For So Long. The title track became Knight's biggest hit. Knight looks back on the glory days of Stax with fondness. "It was like a training ground for a lot of songwriters and artists. You could just walk in off the street and if you had any kind of talent, it could be nurtured there," Knight said. Before Knight spoke, 24/7 performed a tribute to both him and Shirley Brown, who also recorded for Stax Records. Larry Yates, CEO and founder of Key Knote Entertainment, based in Marina Del Ray, Calif., was impressed with the awards program. "I thought the production would be quite a bit smaller but it's a really nice show." Former Stax Records artists The Temprees energetically performed their hit single Dedicated to the One I Love in full sparkling military attire. Big Cynthia brought the crowd to its feet. "I know y'all ain't seen a big beautiful black woman, 400 pounds, but I'm about to show you how they do!" she exclaimed. She had the crowd dancing and clapping for a rendition of Eating ain't Cheatin', from her Malaco release, Doing it Big |
