3,000 attend Jackie Neal's Funeral PDF Print E-mail
Nearly 3,000 people jammed the Great Hall at the Bellemont to pay respects Tuesday to the slain Baton Rouge blues and soul singer, a crowd so overwhelming that some of it had to be turned away. Once the service began, singer Omar Cunningham elicited some of the strongest response. As he sang, mourners rose, clapped and raised their arms.

Sobbing mourners could hardly heed his words -- "Don't cry for Jackie because she's gone home!" -- as they were led out of the hall. He was followed by fellow singers TK Soul, Sir Charles Jones and OB Buchanan, each of whom spoke.

As Neal's family left the service for waiting limousines, her mother, Shirley, whose eyes were almost closed, was propped up and led out by family. Another family member cried and screamed, "It hurts!" as she left.

Within a half hour, in a driving rain, Neal was buried at Roselawn Memorial Park on North Street.
