The Harvey Spirituals
ImageThe Harvey Spirituals present their sophomore CD “We Made It Through.” It’s unanimous, the Harvey Spirituals have produced an even better project this go round and the quality of sound and production is consistent throughout the entire album.

Starting with the first tune “Receive” you’re not quite sure if you’re listening to The Canton Spirituals, Lee Williams, or the Harvey Spirituals and to be placed in the same company with any of those guys, means you’ve got some quality product sporting your name.

“Receive” (#1) and “Not Tired Yet” (#4) both have that “good toe tapping, get them outta your seat quartet beat.” They’re uplifting and fulfilling in the praises that they give. If you appreciate a more contemporary feel “Strengthen Me Jesus” (#5) is the one for you. “True Praise” (#6) is a real grabber, the lyrics speak to the traditional quartet fan – “Now Lord, don’t move my mountain but give me the strength to climb.” This song not only gives the listener a time to catch their breath but reminisce and testify about the trials and tribulations that the Lord has brought us through.

31st Annual Mississippi Delta Blues & Heritage Festival

Brinda Fuller Willis, Ph.D.
Chittlin Circuit Contributing Writer

Approximately 6,500 blues lovers were “Rollin’…Goin Home to da’ Blues” at The 31st Annual Mississippi Delta Blues & Heritage Festival in Greenville, Mississippi, Saturday, September 20, 2008 making it,. …Simply The Best.”

The Humphreys County Convention Center was turned into a squatter’s paradise from 10:00 a.m. until late into the night with the sweet sounds of da’ Blues permeating the air. Visitors from near and far setup tents, parked RVs, vans, cars and bicycles into designated spots until they ran out then they parked alongside the road to get in on the fun. One could sense the excitement seeping into the atmosphere that was heightened by the aroma of barbeque and catfish being served up well before the music got started.

A site for sore eyes was the exchange of hugs and kisses between old friends and new acquaintances as festivalgoers arrived, greeting each other with what most of us regard as the supreme expression of “Southern Hospitality.” For some it was a chance to catch up with friends and relatives but for others it was an opportunity to laugh and talk about childhood experiences that were attached to the music of the Delta that they grew up listening too and now appreciate as an essential part of the African American cultural experience.

Silky Sol and CC Rep Ms Ssugah
Silky Sol and CC Rep Ms Ssugah
The Chittlin Circuit is always looking for new sales representatives and Ms. Ssugah (on the right) from Huntsville, Texas (near Houston) is our latest member.

Her first trip out was to attend (with press credentials) the Texas Music Festival, held the last weekend in August. The show, however was cut short because of the on coming Hurricane Gustav.

Ms. Ssugah did get a chance to spend a few moments with up and coming Southern Soul artist Silky Sol (on the left). You can hear a few of Silky's songs on the Chittlin Circuit Internet Radio station. The track What Cha Want With Me? will be one of the next Southern Soul hits.

For more information on Ms Ssugah, check out her website at: www.myspace.com/texasraisedcajun

Bobby Rush Releases New CD "Look At What You Gettin’"
Bobby Rush
Bobby Rush
No one was surprised this May when Bobby Rush took home the Blues Music Award for “Best Male Soul Blues Artist.” He’s been a leading force in the Southern Soul market as both a recording artists and live performer for decades, and although he’s now—remarkably!—in his 70s he refuses to simply rest on his laurels.

The same night Bobby also took home awards for “best acoustic artist” and “best acoustic album” for Raw (Deep Rush), a testament to his versatility that also highlights how his more contemporary records draw upon the same deep blues vein.

On his new CD Look At What You Gettin’ (Deep Rush) Bobby Rush returns to the modern style with which he’s most closely associated, and once again delivers a fresh mix of ballads, bawdy double meaning songs, and classic soul delivered with the authority of someone who was there during the birth of the genre.
