Soul legend Bobby Purify is back in the game and his latest project, “Better to Have It” was recently nominated as Comeback Album of the Year by The Blues Foundation (see Industry Info, p. 28). Bobby’s real name is Ben Moore and he is best known for his success as ½ the duo James & Bobby Purify who performed such hits as “I’m Your Puppet” and “Shake A Tail Feather.” He has come out of retirement with the help of producer/songwriter Dan Penn and several legendary players of the American soul era. “This project vividly recaptures the entire expanse of first-generation Southern Soul, from the silky balladry “Forever Changed” to the swampy vibes of “The Pond.” Among the most powerful moments is the ballad “Nobody’s Home,’ which moves from social commentary to a sort of down-home metaphysics during its three-and-a half minutes,” says Bud Scoppa. |
